Use the installer package to set up the game.
Run WingIV.exe in the directory you specified.
All setup, including selecting your input device, is done from within the game via the in-game menu which can be accessed by pressing ESC.
This is a very early demo of the Remake. In fact, it might be best to think of this as the pre-alpha version of the demo. We will be updating the demo before moving onto the rest of the game.
Numerous features are not yet in place, such as:
The majority of cameras
Nav map
Various visual effects
Advanced control options (e.g. disabling smart targeting)
There are also a number of features in a very, very early state:
Classic Mode (this will probably only work correctly in the full game as the demo has slightly different models)
Artificial Intelligence
All effects are first-pass
Note that there are some controls you cannot yet adjust (these will be exposed for the full game):
P = Power menu
D = Damage menu
S = Systems
] = Increase selected power
[ = Decrease selected power
Shift + ] = Reset all power
Shift + [ = Set current to max power
Crtrl + [ = Lock power
~ = Lock afterburner
Backspace = Full Stop
\ = Full throttle
1 - 4 = Select comm options 1-4
For the moment you should avoid mapping any other controls to these keys.
Note that you can adjust power settings using a gamepad/joystick by mapping VDU Up/Down.
So, you think you're pretty good, eh? You pathetic descendant of MONKEYS! Beat these kill scores! (See the notes at the bottom...)

Long term we are keen to have full support for multiple languages. However this support is in the very early stages.
The application will default to using the language of your OS, if supported. However you may not find this deseriable given the current state of said support.
To select a different startup language please use one of the following command line arguments when launching the game:
-eng (English)
-jpn (Japanese)
-chn (Chinese)
-fre (French)
-ger (German)
This is a demo specifically created to find bugs and hardware-specific problems as soon as possible. Bugs are not only likely but expected.
If you find you are unable to play the game, please be patient as we work towards fixes. That said, in early internal testing we haven't found anyone unable to play. Here are some of the reported issues and suggested workarounds:
This seems to be a common issue with certain mice, especially Logitech wireless mice.
Why this presents on some games on not others we don't yet know. The current solution is to reduce the frequency at which the mouse informs your computer of its position.
On a logitech mouse this can be accomplished by installing Logicool G Hub and setting your report rate (per second) to 250 or lower.
These are early days; we haven't tested on a wide variety of hardware.
Firstly update your graphics drivers. Wing Commander IV: Remastered uses the Vulkan API which is in constant flux.
If this fails check to see if you have a file called crash.log. This may give some hint to the cause.
At maximum settings, Wing IV: Remastered can use a considerable amount of video memory. If your card is determined to have less than the required amount, texture resolution will be lowered. In the case that you still do not have enough, please set the option "Shadows" to "None" in the menu. Reducing the selected resolution will also reduce the required memory.
If you are still getting this error please reach out with details of your video card.
Firstly, try running the game with the command line -nothread.
To the best of our knowledge, threaded loading is now stable - but such bugs are intermitent and hard to replicate so we can't guarantee it.
If that doesn't work try turning off "Ambient Occlusion" and "Bloom", as well as setting Anti-Aliasing to "None" in the gameflow options and then hit save.
If you experience this error please let us know: which effect caused this issue for you, your GPU model and driver version.
We haven't been able to test every option with every type of hardware; if you find yourself in a broken state you can reset to default.
To do this please delete the file <install_dir>/wc4demo/SFOSAVED.vpb
Note that this will reset all your options, including any key bindings.
We are using the more modern h.265 video codec for the remake. It gives a smaller file size and great image quality, but requires more processing time.
On testing on older machines without hardware decoding support, we found it neccessary to buffer a significant number of frames.
We will work on improving this for the final version; but it's possible that the requirements of this video format will push the hardware requirements of the game beyond your current hardware's capability.
If you are interested in comparing our efforts with the original demo, it is included in this package.
First, install DOSBox.
Go to the directory where you installed DOSBox and run DosBox XXXX - Options.bat, which will open up the config file.
In the dos section either add or change a line for EMS to: ems=false
When done it should look something like this:
# | xms: | Enable XMS support. |
# | ems: | Enable EMS support. |
# | umb: | Enable UMB support. |
# | keyboardlayout: | Language code of the keyboard layout (or none). |
xms=true |
ems=false |
umb=true |
keyboardlayout=auto |
Now run DOSBox:
Type mount c <WINGIVDIR>
(e.g. mount c c:\games\wingivdemo)
Now type:
c:
cd wc4demo
wc4demo.exe
It is entirely possible to run the demo on a Steam Deck. See the video below for step-by-step instructions:
Please note: It can be difficult to locate the game's executable/launch file once the installer has been run. Navigate to /home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata and look for the folder which appeared after running the installer (you can order folders by date, so the newest ones appear at the top). Switch to "All Files" in the File type drop down, otherwise you won't see all the folders while navigating. Try all of those which appear to have been created by the installer and try to find disc c/Games in them to find the WCIV executable.
We would love to hear back about your experiences with the demo - that is the main point of releasing at this early stage.
Some elements such as "Classic Mode" and the AI are too early in development to get any useful feedback, but we would love to hear about:
Flight mechanics
Hardware issues
Video playback issues
Performance (please detail your hardware)
Any difficulties getting your preffered input method to work
Music
Sound Effects
Visual style and effects
We keep an active thread in the wcnews.com forums:

Thank You for checking out this remastered Demo! We hope it successfully captures the nostalgia.
We look forward to bringing you the complete game.
